چکیده

The High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer on the Keck I telescope has been used to measure nine radial velocities having a median precision of ' 2 km s−1 for seven red giants belonging to the isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxy Andromeda II (And II). We find a weighted mean radial velocity of vr = –188±3 km s−1 and a central velocity dispersion of σ0 = 9.3 −2.6 km s −1. There may be evidence for a radial velocity gradient across the face of the galaxy, although the significance of this result is low due to the small number of stars having measured velocities. Our best estimate for the global mass-to-light ratio of And II is M/LV = 20.9 −10.1M /LV, . This value is similar to those of several Galactic dwarf spheroidal galaxies and is consistent with the presence of a massive dark halo in And II. Abundances of Red Giants in the Andromeda Ii Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

We have obtained spectra for 50 candidate red giants in Andromeda II, a dwarf spheroidal companion of M31, using the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrometer on the Keck II telescope. After eliminating background galaxies and Galactic foreground stars, we are left with a sample of 42 red giants for which membership in Andromeda II can be established unambiguously from radial velocities. Line indices...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Pandas’ Cubs: Discovery of Two New Dwarf Galaxies in the Surroundings of the Andromeda and Triangulum Galaxies

We present the discovery of two new dwarf galaxies, Andromeda XXI and Andromeda XXII, located in the surroundings of the Andromeda and Triangulum galaxies (M31 and M33). These discoveries stem from the first year data of the Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey (PAndAS), a photometric survey of the M31/M33 group conducted with the Megaprime/MegaCam wide-field camera mounted on the Canada-France-...

Are Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies Dark Matter Dominated or Remnants of Disrupted Larger Satellite Galaxies? – a Possible Test

The failure of standard cosmolocical models in accounting for the statistics of dwarf satellites and the rotation curve of gas-rich dwarf galaxies in detail has led us to examine whether earlier non-equilibrium models of dwarf spheroidal satellites without any dark matter should be reconsidered in more detail. Such models can explain the high dispersion of the dwarf spheroids by the projection ...

Internal dynamics and dynamical friction effects in the dwarf spheroidal galaxy in Fornax

In the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy the globular clusters are distributed widely, without any significant central concentration. Oh et al. (2000) pointed out that such a distribution is paradoxical: dynamical friction effects estimated using single-component King models would have forced the globular clusters to spiral down to the center of the galaxy well within a Hubble time. This paper is ...
